Oily skin is one of the most common skin concerns for many people. This may be because oily skin presents some unique challenges that people do not want to face. Acne breakouts, shiny complexion, blackheads, dust, dirt—and a lot of dissatisfaction are some of the things that are associated with this kind of skin issue.
However, the good news is that the right skin care routine and products can help people manage all these problems, so that oily skin becomes less of an issue. Given below are some top tips for developing a daily skin care routine that will have your oily skin problem sorted out! Have a look:
Cleanse in the Morning and Evening
This is the most important skin care step. Oily skin needs more cleansing than any other type of skin. Use the best facial cleanser for oily skin, which we believe is Synergie Skin’s Ultracleanse. (While Synergie has other fantastic cleansers, such as Biocleanse and Micellution, these are better suited to without oily skin types.) Ultracleanse’s gel formulation cleans deeply to clear away excess oil and dead skin, preventing buildup in the skin’s pores.
Give your face a complete cleansing in the morning and evening. Why morning? Because your skin remains busy shedding skin cells and producing oils overnight while you sleep.
Correct the Skin’s Microbiome
While many people advise using a toner after cleansing, at Skin Elegance we agree with Synergie’s founder, Terri Vinson, that toners are typically just too harsh on the skin because they’re mostly composed of drying alcohol. Instead, we suggest using alternatives like Evapore-8, which reduces the appearance of large pores (that may contribute to oiliness), or Dermiotic, an alcohol-free pre-serum elixir. Dermiotic balances the skin’s microbiome to treat the root cause of a range of skin’s conditions. Apply it with a cotton ball after cleansing your face.
Feed Your Skin
Just as I believe it’s important to support your internal body with supplements (because food just isn’t as nutritious as it used to be, and let’s face it, for many of us, our diet isn’t what it should be), it’s also important to support your skin with vitamins applied directly to it. We recommend using essential vitamins on your oily skin each day. What are those vitamins? It’s pretty simple, really: vitamins A and B!
You may know vitamin A as retinol, a powerful regulator in skin processes—including cell oil production. (Read the details about the benefits of retinol for your skin in our earlier blog post.) The B vitamin that’s most important for your skin is niacinamide (B3), which is a multi-tasker that—like vitamin A—also regulates oil production. (Note: we also consider vitamin C to be an essential vitamin, but it’s not a priority if our main issue is oily skin or acne.)
At Skin Elegance we offer both the retinol products in the Synergie line: Ultimate A and it’s even more potent ‘sister product’, Acceler-A. begin with Ultimate A and after 3-6 months, step up to Acceler-A. As with any new product, start with a small test patch for a few days before applying it to your whole face.
Synergie also has two niacinamide serums, both of which are available at Skin Elegance. Vitamin B Serum is one of our most popular products; it contains 13% niacinamide. Recently, Synergie launched XCell B, which at 21%, we believe has the highest concentration of niacinamide available today. As with the A serums, start with the lower concentration product for a few months before moving to the higher one.
Apply your A and B serums in the evening. They are fine to use at the same time, but do wait a few minutes for them to absorb, before using a moisturizer. If you are also using a vitamin C serum in your skin care routine, be sure to use the C in the mornings, and the A and B at night. Don’t mix the C with the other two vitamins, as it’s likely to make them ineffective.
Use Moisturizer Twice a Day
Just because you have an oily skin type does not mean you should skip the moisturizer! It’s a very important step for oily skin as well, which can be dehydrated even while it’s oily. However, you need to be very specific in your choice of moisturizer . As your skin tends to develop oil, look for a moisturizer that is lightweight, water-based, free of oils, and has essential ingredients to lock healthy moisture in the skin. At Skin Elegance, we have various choices of moisturizers formulated for acne-prone skin such as BrightEnlite Milk Moisturizer (which also reduces the appearance of large pores) and Hydrogel Light Hydrating Gel.
Anything Else?
Deep Cleanse
Use a deep cleanser such as Detox/Antiox once a week. It contains kaolin and bentonite clays to absorb excess oil.
Use Blotting Papers
Once you make the above-mentioned steps your daily skin care routine, you do 80% of the work to manage oily skin. You may also want to consider other ways to help you reduce your skin’s oiliness. The use of blotting paper is one such recommendation. Use these papers during the day to reduce shine on your face. Be gentle: press the paper against your skin for a few seconds and let it absorb most of the oil from your skin. You can repeat this throughout the day when required.
Wash Your Face After Physical Activity
If you’ve worked out or done any physical exercise that’s worked up a sweat, be sure to wash your face as soon as possible afterwards to remove sweat, as well as grime that may block the pores that produce oil. follow this routine during the weekends or after each exercise. Doing this will help them to remove particles responsible for producing oil.
